Chancre – a painless ulceration formed during the primary stage of syphilis.
A transmission and transmutation of a memory couched in shame. This essay video includes, among others, excerpts of text from The Writings of a Savage by Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) detailing his experiences in Tahiti and a passage from Malay Magic (1900) by Walter William Skeat, which describes a female vampire known in Malay folklore as a ‘Pontianak’.

Singapore's colonial founder Sir Stamford Raffles docked his ship upon arrival; a quarantine centre for immigrants and pilgrims returning from Mecca; a penal colony for political detainees and secret society leaders; and a sleepy holiday resort.
Unlike other neighbouring islands, however, St. John's was never fully developed. It occupies an in-between space, the vestiges of its history scattered around the land: out-of-bound markers and fences, deserted paths and dilapidated housing. Its indeterminacy stands in sharp contrast to Singapore, where land use is meticulously planned to fulfil economic and social functions.
In this film, St. John's Island -- otherwise known as Bukit Orang Salah (approximately, 'Hill of Wrong People”, or “Hill of Misfits”), a nickname coined by the people who were quarantined there -- becomes a site of and for reflection, prompting questions about our history, heritage and identity. This artwork was realised with support from the President's Young Talents Credit Suisse Artist Commissioning Award.

A short film by Lei Yuan Bin, An Autumn Afternoon pays homage to Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu. Shot in Japan, it shows lingering views of recurring motifs in Ozu’s films—trains, family outings, and children taking pictures. Known for his observational approach to filmmaking in works such as 03-Flats (2014) and White days (2010), Lei updates Ozu’s style with his own sense of composition, duration, and pace.
